INFECTIVE DERMATITIS

This condition is as a direct result of a skin infection caused by bacteria (usually staphylococcal). It usually clears up after the infection has been treated.

There is usually a primary suppurative (infected and weeping) site i.e. pressure (bedsores) sores and skin ulcers where the pus discharged leads to infection of the eczema/dermatitis lesions.

As this condition is accompanied by severe itching, scratching will cause the rupturing of and erosion of the blisters and prurilent (pussy) crusts form. The infected lesions are then spread by the continual scratching and in severe cases the patient may have a fever, swollen lymph glands and Leucocytosis (an increase in the number of white blood cells). The patient sometimes experiences a bitter taste in the mouth, lack of appetite/thirst, burning sensation of the skin, rapid heart beat, occasional nausea and constipation can also accompany this condition.

In severe cases the site of the initial infection may become red, swollen and severely infected.

It can, at times, be extremely hard to diagnose between contact dermatitis and infective dermatitis/eczema. This is especially the case with “Acute” dermatitis/eczema.
