CHILDHOOD ATOPIC DERMATITIS/ECZEMA

Normally there is a reduction in the presentation of weepy, fluid filled lesions but an increased thickening (lichenification) of the epidermis of the skin.

Exaggeration of the normal skin creases also occurs, due to abnormal/constant scratching or rubbing of the skin, and this becomes the predominant presentation of the skin condition. The areas affected include the sides of the neck, wrists, ankles, knees but occasionally may also be present on the limbs at the elbow joints in the “hollow areas” and behind the knee joints.

Education of the parents and the child (if old enough) is crucial as the condition is a “chronic” relapsing one:-

It is important for parents of children sufferers to remember that they should avoid kissing and cuddling their children IF THEY ARE INFECTED BY AN ACTIVE HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS. Because the herpes simplex virus is extremely contagious infection of the child will result in a very SERIOUS FORM of the herpes virus when it crosses and joins with the eczema. This is called Eczema Herpeticum and it is an extremely painful and serious infection. It can cause a widespread "erpes break out" over the entire face and parts of the child’s body.
